North Kiaka Quartzite Mine - Additional Information
Overview
SIMCOA Operations Pty Ltd. is proposing the North Kiaka Project, a quartzite mine approximately 15 km north of the Town of Moora, within the Shire of Moora. The revised proposal is expected to generate up to 130,000 tonnes per annum of lump quartz for downstream processing at the Kemerton Silicon Smelter, located in the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area, 17 km north-east of Bunbury, WA. The proposal will extend SIMCOA’s operations by 18 years.
The proposal will be an open-cut mine operating above the water table, with mined ore being pre-processed (crushed and screened) at the existing Moora Quartzite Mine before being transported off-site. The proposal includes a waste rock landform, mine ore pad, topsoil & low-grade stockpile and supporting infrastructure.
The proposal will require the clearing of 17.12 hectares (ha) of native vegetation, within a 216.42 ha development envelope.
The proposal is adjoining the currently approved mine (Silicon Project, Kemerton and Mine at Moora - Revised Proposal), regulated under Ministerial Statement 813. The EPA considered the proposal a significant amendment to an existing approved proposal under s.40AA of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.
