Overview

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited proposes to develop a new iron ore mine and associated infrastructure at the Turee Syncline deposit, located approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Paraburdoo in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

The Proposal will involve the construction and operation of a greenfield mine site and associated infrastructure. Mining will consist of a series of open pits with additional disturbance activities required for the supporting infrastructure. The mine will produce up to 10 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of dry ore and the expected operational mine life is approximately 18 years.

Why your views matter

A Public Environmental Review (PER) has been prepared by Rio Tinto in accordance with Western Australian Government procedures and is released for public review. The PER describes the proposal, examines the likely environmental effects and the proposed environmental management procedures associated with the proposed development.
