Overview
Image Resources NL proposes to develop a mineral sands extraction project south of Orange Springs Road, Cowalla (Shire of Gingin). The proposal includes progressive and linear dredge mining of the sand resource operating over a 10-year period and the development of temporary waste dumps and tailings storage, processing facilities, solar drying ponds, water supply infrastructure and associated supporting infrastructure.
The proposed mine disturbance area is approximately 950 hectares (ha) within a 1950 ha development envelope, and the proposed external infrastructure disturbance area is approximately 50 ha within a 75 ha development envelope.
The proposal is located approximately 800 metres south of Moore River and abuts the Moore River National Park to the east. The proposal site contains native vegetation constituting potential threatened ecological communities, habitat for threatened species of black cockatoo, and mapped Conservation Category Wetlands (damplands).
Why your views matter
At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.
What happens next
Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
The EPA's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
