Atlas Iron Pty. Ltd (the proponent) propose to develop the Corunna Downs Project (the proposal), an iron ore project located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The proposal includes the development of five open pits using conventional drill and blast, load and haul methods.  23.3 million tonnes of iron ore will be mined above the watertable over an approximate timeframe of 6 years.  Associated infrastructure will include waste rock dumps, a mine operation centre, borefield and accommodation camp.

The proposal would involve clearing of no more than 423.11 hectares (ha) of native vegetation within the 2,257.6 ha development envelope.

Why We Are Consulting

At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.

What Happens Next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.

The EPA's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
