Overview

Leichhardt Industrials Pty Ltd (Leichhardt) is seeking to develop a salt production and export operation in the Cape Preston East area, approximately 55 kilometres (km) westsouth-west of Karratha in Western Australia (WA). The proposal will utilise seawater and evaporation to produce concentrated salt products for export.

The proposal includes the development of a series of concentrator and crystalliser ponds, processing plant, product pipeline and offshore export facility (offshore pylon wharf and platform or umbilicus and mooring). Supporting infrastructure includes drainage channels, product dewatering facilities, desalination plant, bitterns outfall, jetty and small boat ramp, pumps, pipelines, power supply, access roads, groundwater bores, accommodation camp, administration buildings, workshops, laydown areas, landfill facility, communications facilities and other associated infrastructure.

Why your views matter

At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
