We did
The EPA considers that this small scale, "proof of concept", hydraulic fracture stimulation proposal is unlikely to have a significant effect on the environment. Any potential impacts can be further evaluated, regulated and mitigated by the Department of Mines and Petroleum and the Department of Water. The EPA determined not to assess the proposal but provided public advice to the proponent.
Overview
Buru Energy Limited proposes to undertake tight gas stimulation using hydraulic fracturing of four existing exploration wells (2 in the Yulleroo region and 2 in the Valhalla-Asgard region) in the Canning Basin area of Western Australia.
What happens next
Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
