Overview

The Marillana Creek (Yandi) Life of Mine Proposal is a significant amendment located approximately 90 kilometres (km) northwest of the town of Newman.

BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd proposes to extend existing iron ore mining operations approved under Ministerial Statement 679 and as amended by Ministerial Statement 1039.

The proposal includes the expansion of operations at the approved Marillana Creek (Yandi) operation to mine the entire Yandi orebody within Mining Lease 270SA. This will include new above and below water table mining, creek crossings, haul and access roads, pipelines and associated infrastructure, and subsequent rehabilitation of disturbed areas. 

The proposal is located within the approved 13,158 hectares (ha) development envelope. An additional clearing of up to 95 ha of native vegetation, of which up to 48 ha is riparian vegetation, is proposed. The total disturbance of the approved operations and the proposal is 4,653 ha of native vegetation. The proposal is located within the Banjima Native Title determination area (WCD2014/001)

At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
