Overview

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is seeking approval to develop and operate the Orebody 32 deposit, located approximately 10 kilometres north-east of the Newman Township in the Shire of East Pilbara. The Proposal is known as the Orebody 32 East Above Water Table Mine Project.
 
This will require the clearing of 350 ha of vegetation.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.

The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
