Overview

The Proposal is to construct and operate a new multimodal port in the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA), approximately 30 km south of Perth.

The Proposal includes:

  • A port facility.
  • Adjacent areas of landside development.
  • An offshore breakwater.
  • Dredging for a second main channel.
  • Dredging for access channels, turning basins and berthing areas.
  • Use of dredge material for beneficial re-use and, where required, placement in approved marine placement areas.
  • Removal of the disused Kwinana Bulk Berth 1 (KBB1) Jetty.
  • Removal of the KBB2 Jetty, with replacement infrastructure as a component of the port facility.
  • Connections to road and rail infrastructure up to the vicinity of Rockingham Road.
  • Relocation, removal or upgrade of existing infrastructure, structures and buildings.
  • Temporary construction infrastructure.
  • Maintenance of all infrastructure and assets, including maintenance dredging.

The terrestrial elements of the Proposal are located within an area of existing heavy industrial land uses within the KIA, serviced by existing road and rail infrastructure. The marine elements of the Proposal are primarily located within Cockburn Sound adjacent to the KIA, whilst the second main channel extends from the northern boundary of Cockburn Sound to the Indian Ocean.

Why your views matter

At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
