The EPA determined that the proposal would be assessed at the level of Public Environmental Review due to a large number of environmental factors including complex issues associated with water management in Weeli Wolli Creek Catchment and Fortescue Marsh.
Overview
Fortescue Metals Group Limited intends to expand its current operations within the Pilbara region to include the development of a new iron ore project within the Nyidinghu Project Area. The Project is located on Marillana Station approximately 35 km south of Fortescue's Cloudbreak operations and approximately 100 km north-west of Newman.
What happens next
Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
