We did
Having regard to the measures by the proponent to minimise potential impacts, the EPA is satisfied that the potential impacts can be managed to meet EPA's objectives for benthic communities and habitat, marine environmental quality, and marine fauna. The EPA determined not to assess the proposal but provided public advice.
Overview
Skiron Opco Pty Ltd is proposing to construct and operate an offshore submarine fibre optic cable network from Port Hedland to Darwin, to provide connectivity requirements for the current and emerging iron ore and oil and gas industry. The extent of the proposal being considered by the Environmental Protection Authority is limited to Western Australian State jurisdiction.
What happens next
Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.
The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
