Overview

The Shire of Gingin has referred a development application to the EPA for a decision on whether or not to assess the proposal and, if so, the level of assessment. The application, from Longarrow Pty Limited proposes to construct 10 free range poultry sheds to house 50,000 chickens in a 15 hectare fenced paddock as Stage 1 of a 2 stage project intended to ultimately house 100,000 chickens across 20 sheds.  Lot M877 is 153.17 hectares and contains conservation category wetlands including one protected under the Environmental Protection (Swan Coastal Plain lakes) Policy 1992.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied. The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
