Kwinana Reciprocating Engine Facility
Overview
The proposal is for the construction and operation of the Kwinana Reciprocating Engine Facility (KREF), a 300 megawatt (MW) gas-fired facility within the Kwinana Strategic Industrial Area. The facility would be located on the site of the retired Kwinana Power Station approximately 27 kilometres south-west of Perth.
While the facility may perform peaking functions during periods of high electricity demand, its principal purpose is to provide firming capacity to support the ongoing transition of the SWIS to a renewable-dominated generation mix. The proposal comprises 13 fast-start gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engine units and associated infrastructure, including a substation, upgrades to and connection with the existing Western Power Kwinana Terminal Station, and a gas pipeline connecting to the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
The proposal requires the disturbance of 6.25 hectares (ha) within a 19.64 ha development envelope, including the clearing of up to 0.37 ha of native vegetation.
