Sand Quarries Within Gnangara Pine Plantation

Overview

Hanson Australia Pty Ltd proposes to develop three sand extraction quarries within tenements located within the Gnangara-Moore State Forest (Shire of Wanneroo and Shire of Gingin). Excavation is planned in conjunction with felling by the Forest Products Commission.

The three quarries are proposed for:

-Tamega Road, Pinjar (E70-3275);

-Smokebush Hill, Two Rocks (E70-3279); and

-Boundary & Mulga Roads, Gnangara (M70-1306),

The total disturbance for each site is 3553.86 hectares, 5037.39 hectares and 163.11 hectares respectively. Within each site the working footprint is proposed as ~30 hectares at any one time. An additional 5 hectares is proposed for infrastructure.

The attached documentation includes a proposal for sand extraction on tenements E70-3279, E70-3275, E70-3276 and M70-1306. This referral only relates to the three tenements stated above. Please note that McKinley Road (E70-3276) was referred to the EPA separately and determined as Not Assessed - No Advice Given.

Why your views matter

At this initial stage of the EIA process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.

What happens next

Following the seven day public comment period and consideration of any comments received, the EPA will decide whether or not this proposal requires environmental impact assessment and, if so, what level of assessment will be applied.

The Chairman's decisions on level of assessment are released each Monday on the EPA's website.
